Preparation Can Help Calm Fears.

Play ”What If” with your child. This is a game where you make up a situation and the other person suggests problem solutions. It encourages thinking about what you should do when faced with unfamiliar situations. This is a game you can play at home, in the car, or waiting to be served in a restaurant. No supplies needed—just two brains thinking about the same thing.

Since school is starting, make all the situations be school situations. For example, what if you have trouble finding your classroom? If your child offers inappropriate suggestions or can’t think of a suggestion, add some additional information to help him.

I remember this situation …. Could you do this when …? Once when I (or your sister or brother) had that problem, I (they) …. Write the ideas down and post them in an obvious place at home.  Ask your child which suggestions he likes the best.
