Re-rating Your Compliments (7-16-13)

Today’s Parenting Tip:

Decide:        You can get better at including details when you give compliments.

Practice:      Today, write down 10 compliments appropriate for children.  Read over them and mark the ones that are detailed and the ones that are too general.

Did you have more that were detailed than you did for the Parenting Tip inside our Correct; Don’t Criticize pt2 post?

Go back over general ones and rewrite them by making them more detailed.  Throughout the day, give at least five to children you care about.

Remember to believe what you say.

Let us know which tips you like the best or any others you think of that you want to pass along to others.

Today’s Decide and Practice daily parenting tip was inspired by our featured picture book, THE MONSTER WHO LOST HIS MEAN.  Read the book to a child in your life each day as a reminder of what you are deciding and practicing that day.

Come back each day for another good parenting decision and how to practice it. (Each day’s activity will also be posted on Daily Parenting Tips page for easy access.)

Read the whole story at Correct; Don’t Criticize – Part 2.

    • Mia, Did you try it? What happened for you?

I noticed that when I gave the compliments to my daughter she really seemed to take the ones with more details to heart. She seemed invested and interested in what I was saying and believed the compliment. Usually when I tell her “good job” she seems to kind of just blew it off.

You’re right! This is a good idea!

What do you think?
